Between the obvious support shown at the last workshop meeting, and the numerous break-ins lately, you would think that the committee would see the light and expand the police department to allow a 24x7 patrol. What are the committee men afraid of. They have money in surplus for emergencies, I would say this is an emergency. Come on boys re-election is just around the corner, if you like your cushy jobs get off your asses and fix the police department. |

Have there been alot of break-ins lately? commercial or residential?
I believe we have 4 police officers. I believe they are on duty from 8AM to 2AM and then on call after that (similar to fire departments). With Oxford only being 6 sq miles and most of that is open land(non-built up areas) there may not be a need for additional officers. What we do need is more patrols when the officers are on duty. With such a small area to patrol I would think the police would be able to cover every street at least 2 times per shift. Visibility is the key.....not sure what Oxford's responsibility is for route 31 but its a state hwy patrolled by NJ state troopers. Let them patrol that road for speeders and let Oxford patrol all city streets.
One thing that Oxford may want to think about rather then highering a couple of new officers maybe starting an auxilary police depart. I think the law is that you have to pay them either $1.00 or $12.00 per year. Either way its nothing....the auxilary police can be used whenever the city/mayor request additional police presence....usually they are used in towns when there is a special event, etc. They allow police presence while not taking away from regular patrols. These auxilary officers can also assist in regular patrols. |
