Columbia man arrested for driving while suspended

A Columbia NJ man was arrested for driving with a suspended license as a result of a motor vehicle accident on Saturday. Lt. Charles Lilly was dispatched to Rt. 31 near Pequest Rd. for a man in a pickup truck having seizures. Upon arrival, Lt. Lilly found Merle T. Degroat of Columbia sitting in his vehicle across the northbound lane of Rt. 31. A passenger in Degroat's vehicle told of Degroat having a seizure while traveling on Rt. 31. Degroat was able to get the vehicle stopped with the help of his passenger after striking the guardrail on the east side of the roadway. Degroat was taken to Warren Hospital by the Oxford Emergency Squad. Degroat was charged with driving with a suspended license and with being an unlicensed driver after having surrendered his license in in 1998. Oxford Police were assisted at the scene by the Washington Twp. and Belvidere Police Departments.
